Description

The Sanja is a storage bench 130cm long, 46cm deep and 48cm high, built as an upholstered box with a hinged lid. It is covered all over in a cotton and linen fabric, cream with fine charcoal pinstripes running at regular intervals: vertically down the front and the ends, and front to back across the lid. The corners are softly rounded rather than square, the lid overhangs the body by a few millimetres all round, and three dark hinges are set along the back edge. Four small wooden feet lift it just clear of the floor. There are no handles on it.

At 130cm it runs the width of a double bed and sits at the foot of one, which is where the 48cm height earns itself: it is seat height, so it takes someone putting shoes on, and the lid opens on to the whole 130 by 46cm footprint inside for spare bedding, blankets or boots. In a hall it does the same job against a wall, holding what would otherwise be on the floor and giving somewhere to sit while doing it. It takes up to 180kg and weighs 26.8kg.

Underneath the upholstery is a mango wood frame, assembled by hand, and the top is cushioned before it is covered. The outer fabric is a cotton and linen blend, so the weave shows through the colour rather than sitting flat under it. The bench is supplied empty.

How do I look after it?

Go over it regularly with a vacuum or a soft brush to lift surface dust, but never with a rotating vacuum head, which damages the fibres. Dust that works into the weave abrades it and shortens its life. For a small spill, lift the liquid with an absorbent tissue, then blot with a sponge or a folded towel wrung out in lukewarm water, and dry the area with warm air from a hairdryer so it does not watermark. Larger or stubborn marks should go to a professional. Never stand it in direct sunlight, which fades natural dyes and yarns quickly.
