Description

The Sangamo Choice Plus is a battery-powered digital room thermostat combining a large rotary dial with an LCD temperature display, designed to control gas, oil and electric heating systems. An internal electronic sensor monitors room temperature and switches the heating via TPI (Time Proportional and Integral) control, which cycles the boiler on and off in short bursts to maintain the set temperature more efficiently than simple on/off switching.

Designed for wall mounting in living rooms, hallways and other circulation spaces with stable air flow, the thermostat offers two operating modes: comfort (maintains the dialled temperature) and economy (reduces the set temperature by 3°C to save energy when the room is unoccupied). The 5-30°C adjustment range covers typical UK domestic heating needs, and a frost protection mode holds the room at 5°C to prevent pipework freezing when the property is unoccupied in winter.

The black finish pairs with contemporary and minimalist interiors where white plastic controls would stand out. The 105mm width and 92mm height fit a standard single-gang back box, and the volt-free 3A contact rating means the thermostat can control most UK domestic boilers without additional relays. The unit runs on two AA batteries (supplied), with a low-battery indicator on the LCD alerting when replacement is needed.

What is TPI control and how does it improve efficiency?

TPI (Time Proportional and Integral) control cycles the boiler on and off in short, calculated intervals rather than running continuously until the target temperature is reached. This reduces temperature overshoot, maintains a steadier room temperature and cuts fuel consumption compared to simple on/off thermostats.

What's the difference between comfort and economy modes?

Comfort mode maintains the exact temperature set on the dial. Economy mode reduces that set temperature by 3°C, which can be activated manually during the day when the room is unoccupied or at night to save energy without switching the heating off entirely.

Does it need mains power or just batteries?

The thermostat runs entirely on two AA batteries (supplied). There is no mains power requirement. The LCD display shows a low-battery indicator when the batteries need replacing, typically once per year under normal use.

What boiler types is it compatible with?

The 3A volt-free contact rating makes it compatible with most UK gas, oil and electric heating systems. For systems requiring higher switching loads, an additional relay may be needed—consult the installation manual or a qualified heating engineer before wiring.
