Description

A square cushion cover, 50cm by 50cm, woven in two panels that meet in a seam running down the middle. One side is a pale ground crossed by narrow vertical columns of short dashes; the other is a plain flat weave in a muted olive that reads warm rather than green. The yarn is thick enough for the weave to stand up as texture, and the two panels sit at slightly different depths because of it.

At 50 by 50cm this is the standard square, so it fits the pads most sofas are already carrying. Because the two panels are so different, the cover reads one way with the plain side out and another with the dashed side out, and turning it is the quickest way to change what a sofa looks like. On a sofa the seam runs vertically.

The cover is woven on a traditional Indian handloom. The yarn blends wool with recycled polyester spun from plastic waste that has been diverted from oceans and waterways, and the hand weaving is what leaves the small irregularities across the dashed panel. The Samata cover is also made as a 60 by 40cm rectangle.
