Description

A rattan log basket 50cm wide and 43cm high, woven with two tall upright ends and the body slung between them in a deep curve, so the middle drops low and stays open. An arching handle, bound in rattan over a thick core, spans the top from one end to the other. The sides are worked in an open diagonal lattice, the curved floor in close horizontal rows, and every rim is wrapped in the same bound cane.

The open middle is what makes it a log basket rather than a bin: a split log drops in from above or slides in from the side without being lifted over a rim. At 50cm across and 45cm front to back it is a wide basket rather than a tall one, and at 43cm high it stands at hearth height beside most fireplaces. It sits on the floor beside a fire and holds the logs stacked cut face outward. The handle runs across the top, so a loaded basket carries in one hand.

It is rattan throughout, woven by hand in Indonesia and then given a protective wax finish that keeps moisture out. Indonesia has a long weaving tradition behind this shape: rattan was woven there into the decorative mats that dressed traditional long houses, and into baskets made for one job each, for washing, for carrying and for storing food. Growing the cane has slowed logging in some areas, because it became valuable enough that the felling was stopped to let it grow. The basket is made for indoor use.
