Description

The Ruba is a wall shelf that does two jobs at once: a flat board to set things on and, beneath it, a rounded iron rail to hang things from. The board is brown MDF with a visible wood grain, held inside a tubular iron frame whose two sides loop up above the shelf and down below it in one continuous bent line. It is 52cm long, 22cm wide and 22.5cm tall and weighs 0.8KG, a compact piece for a short stretch of wall rather than a whole alcove.

At 22cm wide, the board takes a row of paperbacks, a small plant or a few framed photographs, and the maker gives a maximum load of 5KG, so it is for lighter things rather than a long run of heavy books. The rail underneath is where it earns its place: a scarf or a tote bag in a hallway, a tea towel in the kitchen, or tomorrow's outfit on a hanger in a bedroom. It suits a hallway, a kitchen, a bedroom or a study, and it is a good fit for a small flat where every bit of wall has to work.

The frame is iron and the board MDF, finished with powder coating and a water-based lacquer, and care is simple: wipe it clean with a moist cloth. Two keyhole brackets at the back of the frame are how it hangs on the wall, and the maker's assembly instructions come as a PDF download. For styling, keep the board light and loose, a plant and a couple of books, and let the rail carry one thing at a time; a single soft scarf or a linen tea towel draped over the iron looks deliberate rather than cluttered.
