Description

This wooden wall plaque carries a gentle festive verse, "Robins appear when Christmas is near", set in black typewriter-style lettering across a soft white background. A little robin in a red scarf perches at the right-hand end among holly leaves and bright red berries, while pine cones and more holly gather at the left, with sprigs of greenery trailing along the top edge. A speckled white border frames it like a light frost. It is a slim rectangle, 38cm wide, 8cm high and just 1.3cm deep, and the colours are mostly white, with the greens, reds and warm browns of the watercolour-style artwork.

Because it is long and narrow, it fits where bigger Christmas decorations will not: above a doorway, along a slim stretch of wall in the hall, over a fireplace or beside the kitchen window. It looks just as at home on a mantelpiece or a deep shelf, leaning back against the wall among baubles, cards and greenery. The verse makes it a cheerful sign that the festive season has arrived, and it is the kind of piece that comes out of the decorations box each December to go up alongside the tree and the wreath. As a small Christmas gift it is easy and thoughtful, and the robin and holly suit traditional and modern homes alike.

The plaque is made of wood, with the verse and artwork printed across its flat front face and a clean rectangular outline that keeps the look simple. At only 1.3cm deep it sits close to the wall and never looks bulky. To keep the colours fresh, dust it now and then with a soft dry cloth, and keep it away from damp, steam and direct heat. We like it set above a mantelpiece with a garland of greenery beneath, so the robin looks as though it has just landed among the holly.
