Description
These robin salt and pepper pots bring a little garden scene to the table, with two plump birds made in dolomite ceramic. Each robin is modelled in the round, with a rounded body, a short tail, dark eyes and a small grey beak, and fine texture picks out its feathers. The pair is multi-coloured in the robin's familiar markings: brown wings and back, an orange face, a red-orange breast, a white belly and grey feet. Modelled as mirror images, the two birds turn to face each other side by side.
They belong wherever salt and pepper get passed around: the kitchen table for everyday meals, the dining table when friends come for supper, or a tray carried out for breakfast. At 5.6cm high, 10.6cm wide and 8.7cm deep, they are small enough to sit beside a plate or by the bread basket without crowding the cloth. Between meals there is no need to tuck them away in a cupboard: left out on a dresser shelf, a kitchen windowsill or the end of a worktop, they read as a pair of cheerful bird ornaments rather than tableware waiting for the next meal.
Each pot is pierced through the top of the head, and the two carry different numbers of holes, so salt and pepper are easy to tell apart at a glance. The ceramic has a smooth, glossy surface over the moulded feathers, with the colours blending softly from the orange face into the red-orange breast. A little care keeps them looking their best: wipe them with a soft damp cloth and dry them straight away, and dust them with a soft dry cloth while they are left out. Set them either side of a jug of flowers or a fruit bowl for an easy table setting, or wrap the pair up as a cheerful, practical gift.
