Description

A round iron fire bowl on a three legged iron stand, with a grill that sits inside the rim and lifts out. The bowl is a reclaimed Indian cooking kadai and it shows the work it has already done: a seam and a line of rivets across the outside, hammer marks under the rust, and two upright loop handles at the rim. It stands 55cm to the rim and measures 70 to 80cm across the bowl.

The stand holds the base of the bowl about 32cm off the ground, so the fire sits at the height of a low seat rather than on the floor. At 70 to 80cm across it needs clear space around it: the middle of a terrace or a gravelled yard, with nothing overhead and no wall close by. The grill sits in the rim for cooking over the embers and lifts out when the bowl is wanted as a fire on its own. The whole thing weighs 31.2kg, so it is a two handed lift and tends to stay where it is put.

The bowl and the stand are both iron. Every bowl was a cooking pan before it became a fire bowl, so the depth of the rust, the marks across the outside and the exact width differ from one to the next, and no two are alike. Either wood or charcoal can be burnt in it. The stand and the grill come with the bowl.

Frequently Asked

How wide is the bowl?

Between 70 and 80cm. The bowls are reclaimed, so no two are exactly the same width.

Does it come with a stand and a grill?

Yes. Both are included.

Can it be used indoors?

No. It is for outdoor use only. Do not use it in an enclosed area or building, or under an overhead structure.

What can be burnt in it?

Wood or charcoal. Light it with certified firelighters only, and never with spirit or petrol.

How do I look after it?

Rub the grill down with a wire brush and hot soapy water after use, dry it and give it a coat of cooking oil before storing it somewhere dry. The bowl takes the same wire brush. Empty standing rainwater out regularly to slow rusting, and put it under cover over the winter months.

Does it get hot?

Very. Do not touch it without heat proof gloves, let it cool fully before handling it, and keep children and pets out of reach.
