Description

Ray Gold L is a round wall mirror one metre across, ringed by sixty small gold powder coated metal discs that interlock around the whole edge. The discs are placed at equal intervals, and because they sit slightly proud of the glass they appear in the reflection as well as around it, so the ring seems to carry on inside the mirror. It measures 105cm including the discs and is 5cm deep. The design is by Jeffrey Huyghe.

It holds a wall on its own, over a fireplace, in a hallway or above a console table. It is rated bathroom proof, so a bathroom wall is fine as well as a living space. It hangs in one direction only, which is worth noting when planning the fixings. The discs mean it wants a little clearance around it rather than being tucked into a corner, since the outline is wider than the glass. The sixty discs sit on the outer edge rather than on the face, so nothing interrupts the reflection itself, and at 5cm deep the ring stands far enough off the wall to cast a broken shadow behind it. Ray is made in two finishes and two sizes, so there is a smaller version and a second colourway if this one is not right for the wall. The equidistant spacing of the discs is what makes the ring read as geometry rather than decoration.

The frame is powder coated metal, which is a hard baked finish rather than a paint layer, and at 11KG the mirror is light for its diameter. Two screws with washers and wall plugs are supplied and nothing needs assembling. Clean the glass with a soft cloth and cleaner sprayed onto the cloth, and dust between the discs with a dry brush rather than working a cloth into the gaps. Seven year warranty, made in Belgium.
