Rattan Chunky Storage Basket - Natural

A round basket woven from thick rattan canes, 40cm tall and 47cm across. The body is a close weave of chunky strands laid in horizontal courses. The rim is finished quite differently: heavy canes bent into a row of large open loops that stand above the weave all the way round. The rattan is left its own colour, a pale honey going greyer where the canes have weathered, and the surface is smooth rather than hairy.

At 47cm across this is a floor basket. It takes firewood, rolled blankets, spare cushions, or a large plant standing in its own pot. At 40cm tall it is deep enough that a blanket disappears into it rather than sitting on top, and the looped rim gives somewhere to take hold of it.

The basket is rattan with rope. It is woven by hand in Indonesia, where rattan weaving is an old tradition and baskets were made for washing, for carrying and for storing food long before they were made for anything else. The rattan is cultivated rather than cut wild, and in some areas its value has held logging back, because the land is worth more with the rattan growing on it. No two baskets are woven identically.

How do I look after it?

A soft bristle brush will lift any dust that has built up. Mild soap and water on a soft cloth will take off any dirt. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners away from it.
