Ranchi Iron Sideboard - Antique Brass

The Ranchi is a two-door cabinet built in iron and finished in antique brass, 122cm wide, 84cm high and 40cm deep. Both doors are a single pane of glass in a slim frame, hung on exposed barrel hinges at the outer edges and pulled by a flat brass disc. Inside, one shelf runs the full width and splits the cabinet into two open bays. The brass finish is carried over every iron surface, inside and out, so the back of the cabinet reads the same warm colour as the front, and the whole thing stands on four slim legs that continue the line of the corners.

At 84cm it stands at kitchen counter height, and 122cm across gives it the run of a hallway wall or the length behind a dining table. The doors are glass, so whatever goes in is on show with them shut: glassware, a row of bowls, folded linen. The single shelf divides the inside into two bays of similar height, which takes a media box and a run of records below, or plates above and serving dishes underneath.

The frame, the carcass and the legs are iron and the door panels are glass. The antique brass is a finish on the iron rather than solid brass, and it is applied unevenly enough that the tone shifts across a single panel. It weighs 48kg empty.
