Description

The Rana is a low round basket handwoven from seagrass, 35cm across and 17.5cm tall. The form is pot-bellied: it swells out from a flat base, draws back in towards the top, and then opens into a wide flat rim that lies almost horizontal. The seagrass is coiled in fine close rows, natural straw through the body with a band of moss green worked in at the shoulder and around the rim. The weave stays soft, so the rim gives under a hand rather than holding rigid.

At 35cm across and only 17.5cm tall this sits on the floor and stays below the line of a sofa arm. It takes toys out of the middle of a room, kindling beside a stove, or dry goods on a pantry shelf. The short one stands in front of the taller, and empty the shape reads plainly. The low sides mean the contents stay within reach without anything being lifted out of the way.

The basket is seagrass throughout. The fibre is dyed in moss and natural tones before it is woven, so the green runs through the grass rather than sitting on the surface, and every basket is woven by hand using traditional techniques. The low, open shape is worked to keep the form flexible rather than stiff. The Rana is also made tall at 30cm, and wide at 52.5cm across in natural and rust.
