Description

A side table woven in rattan over an iron frame, 56cm high with a round top 42cm across. The top is a flat disc worked in a tight spiral from the centre outwards, and it overhangs the body the whole way round. Below it the form pulls in to a short waist and then flares out into a straight drum that runs down to the floor. The weave is close enough that no metal shows anywhere on the table.

At 56cm it stands taller than most side tables, level with the arm of a chair rather than below it, and the 42cm top takes a lamp, a book and a glass. It stands beside an upholstered armchair. The drum base is closed all the way round, so nothing shows underneath the table.

The frame is iron and the weave is rattan. Rattan has been woven by hand across much of India for generations, and in some areas the value of the crop has slowed deforestation, because logging is held back to let the rattan grow. Every table is woven by hand, so the pitch of the weave and the tone of the cane shift from one to the next.
