Description
The Quinn is a goose neck outdoor wall lantern: a curved arm carries a flared hood out from a round wall plate, with a clear ribbed glass shade hanging beneath it. The body is solid brass with a satin nickel finish, a soft, low sheen of silver. The ribbing in the glass softens the look of the lamp inside, and there is no cage around the shade to interrupt the light. It measures 17cm wide and 30cm tall, and stands 22cm from the wall on a 10cm wall plate. It is rated IP64, which means it is dust-tight and protected from splashing water, so it lives outdoors in British weather.
Its natural home is beside a front door or in a porch, lighting the step and the house number for visitors after dark. It works just as well along a garden wall, on a garage or outbuilding, or on a boathouse, and a pair either side of a door looks right. The maker says these lanterns are designed for outdoor places that call for a nautical or industrial feel, and that the maritime influence shows in the range's materials, designs and names. Satin nickel suits a crisper, cooler scheme, and sits happily with chrome door furniture, stainless steel or a grey painted front door.
Beneath the satin nickel, the body is solid brass, which gives the lantern a reassuring weight of 2.6KG. The cable enters at the rear, so it is hidden behind the wall plate rather than running across the face of the wall. It takes one E27 (ES) lamp, the common large screw cap, on a 230V supply, so a replacement is easy to find. As with any mains light, it should be installed by a qualified electrician. At 30cm tall and 22cm from the wall, it sits comfortably beside most front doors.
