Description
The Quinn Guard is a goose-neck outdoor wall lantern in solid brass with a satin nickel finish, a soft silver sheen rather than a mirror shine. A curved arm drops from a round wall plate to a wide, flared hood, and beneath it a cage of slim bars guards a clear ribbed glass. The ribbing scatters the light, while the cage protects the glass from knocks. It is 17cm wide and 30cm tall, standing 22cm from the wall on a 10cm wall plate, and weighs 2.6KG. Its IP64 rating means it is dust-tight and protected from splashing water, so it can live outdoors through British weather.
This is a lantern for the outside of the house: beside a front door, in a porch, on a garden wall or on a boathouse. The maker says these lights are often sold in pairs, positioned either side of a doorway or entrance. They were designed, the maker says, for outdoor places where an industrial or nautical effect is wanted, and the maker adds that the maritime influence shows in the range's materials, designs and names. Satin nickel gives that harbourside character a cooler, quieter tone than bare brass, so it sits as comfortably against grey render or painted brick as it does on a cottage.
Beneath the satin nickel the body is solid brass, and the maker says that construction, together with the guard around the glass, means these lights are built to last. It takes one E27 lamp, the large Edison screw cap often written as ES. The cable enters at the rear, which keeps it out of sight behind the wall plate. As a mains light, it should be installed by a qualified electrician. If you are buying a pair, settle the height and spacing on the wall beforehand, so both lanterns sit level either side of the door.
