Description

The Pisang is built from braid rather than woven fabric. A flat plait of banana fibre and cotton is coiled round the shade in close rows from the top rim to the foot, each row sitting against the last, so the surface is a series of raised horizontal ridges with the chevron of the plaiting visible along every one. The colour is a pale straw, lighter than jute and more even than rattan. This is the large: 21.5cm tall and 40.5cm across.

The braid is dense, so very little light passes through the body of the shade and almost all of it leaves through the open top and bottom. That makes the Pisang a shade that lights a surface and a ceiling rather than glowing in itself, and at 40.5cm across it does that over a wide area, which suits a floor lamp base or a wide table lamp. On an ordinary side table it will overhang. At 21.5cm deep it hides the lampholder from a seated eye. It weighs 0.87kg.

The braid is plaited and then coiled and stitched by hand around a metal frame, so the number of rows and the tension between them differ from shade to shade, and the ridges sit slightly unevenly on every one. The Pisang range also holds a medium size. No bulb, base or fitting is included.
