A floor lamp, 48cm wide, in antique bronze. At 48cm wide it is a little narrower than a standard interior door.

A warm metal finish reflects light yellow rather than white, which is why gold and brass make a room feel warmer at the same brightness. It also reads as softer against warm woods and darker paint, where a cool finish can look stark. Brass warms a room in a way chrome and steel do not, because it reflects light yellow rather than white. Unlacquered, it will darken slowly and unevenly with handling, which most people come to prefer. It comes with its shade, so there is no second purchase to make it usable.

E27 lampholder, 1 of them up to 10-12W LED, and no bulb in the box. Because it is E27, bulbs are stocked everywhere and you are never tied to one supplier. It is not dimmable, which means you choose the warmth at the bulb rather than at the switch: a 2700K bulb will do more here than a dimmer would. The cable is black, with a foot switch you can reach without groping behind furniture, and a uk 3 pin with 3 amp fuse already fitted. The head adjusts, so you can aim the light at a book rather than a ceiling.

The base is felted, which matters if it is going on a polished or waxed surface. At 4.11kg the weight is in the base, which is what stops a tall lamp walking when it is knocked. A GLS shaped bulb, which is the word to look for on the box.

A shade does two jobs at once and they pull against each other: it hides the bulb from your eye, and it decides how much light escapes sideways rather than up and down. A dense fabric does the first well and the second hardly at all.
