Description

A straight-sided ceramic jug, 21.5cm tall with a body 8.5cm across, a pulled triangular lip at the front and a large looped handle standing clear at the back. The upper two thirds is painted with broad vertical bands in a soft clay colour, separated by columns of small dark dots, and below them the body runs plain cream down to the foot. The glaze is glossy, and the brushwork wavers enough that the bands are not quite parallel.

The body is a straight cylinder rather than a bellied one, 8.5cm across, and only the handle reaches beyond that, so the jug stands tall on a table without taking much room. It pours from a pulled lip rather than a fitted spout. It is the larger of the two Patthar jugs.

The jug is ceramic. The surface is painted individually with a brush, a process that calls for precision and that only a handful of makers can do, so the width of the bands and the spacing of the dots vary from jug to jug. It belongs to the wider Patthar range, which runs to plates, bowls, mugs, a teapot, a butter dish, egg cups and a cup and saucer.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

21.5cm tall, with a body 8.5cm across. The handle stands clear of that.

How is the pattern made?

It is painted on by hand with a brush, band by band, with the columns of dots put in between them.

Will every jug look the same?

Close, but not exactly. Every jug is painted individually, so the bands and the dots fall a little differently on each one.

Is there a smaller one?

Yes. The Patthar jug is also made in a small size.

How do I look after it?

Wash it after every use so that it does not stain. Hand wash only, with a mild detergent, and do not leave it to soak. Handle it with care, as ceramic chips.
