Description

Ovaline sets a cast brass ring into the face of a gently domed disc of natural Spanish alabaster. The ring is not smooth: it carries a hammered, pitted texture that catches light along its rim and reads as worked metal rather than a machined bezel. The disc is 350mm across and stands 76mm proud of the wall, and the stone swells slightly towards the centre so the ring sits at the high point rather than flat on the surface.

The LED behind the disc lights the alabaster from within, and because the ring is open at its middle the brightest part of the fitting is the aperture rather than the rim. Light spreads outward from there through the stone and falls away towards the edge, so the disc reads as a lit circle around a brighter eye. That contrast between the pale stone and the dark textured brass is the whole point of the design.

The ring and its concealed fixing are brushed brass and the disc is cut from natural Spanish alabaster, so the veining, the translucency and the way the light gathers behind the ring differ from piece to piece. No two are alike. Rated IP20 for interior use. Ovaline also comes as a taller oval at 460mm, which takes the same ring detail and stretches it into a stadium shape for a narrower stretch of wall. Because the fitting is lit from behind rather than through the ring alone, the disc still reads as a lit object when the aperture is out of your sightline.
