Description

The Otuba is a jug blown as a straight-sided cylinder of clear glass, 23cm tall and 12.5cm across, ribbed in fine vertical flutes that run the whole way from the base to the rim. One side of the rim is drawn out into a pouring lip, and a thick clear handle is applied from just under the rim and curves down to about two thirds of the height. It holds 2250ml. The base is flat and the glass thickens towards it, taking on a faint grey-green cast where it is deepest.

2250ml is a little over two litres, which fills nine tumblers, so one jug covers a table laid for six without going back to the tap. At 23cm it stands well above the glasses around it and is tall enough to read as the centre of a laid table rather than something to be moved out of the way. The ribbing breaks the light passing through, so water in it throws a broken pattern on the table rather than a flat one, and the flutes give a grip on a jug that gets wet on the outside.

The glass is recycled, hand blown by makers working in the traditional way: waste glass is collected, washed to take out impurities, crushed and melted down before it is blown into a new shape. The ribbing comes from the mould it is blown into. Because each one is blown individually, the thickness of the wall and the depth of the tint vary from jug to jug. The Otuba range also runs to tumblers, highballs, wine glasses and champagne flutes.
