Ornato Round M is a 70cm round mirror with a patch of gold leaf applied by hand over one part of the rim. The leaf has a torn, irregular boundary where it meets the plain mirror, which is what hand application looks like when it has not been tidied up afterwards.

The asymmetry is the design. Turned one way the gold sits low and heavy; turned another it reads as a highlight at the top, and the mirror hangs on a rotating suspension so it can be set whichever way the wall wants. The specification below records that suspension; we have no photograph of the fitting itself and will not describe how it works. At 70cm it is a hallway or dressing room piece rather than a bathroom one, and it is not rated for a bathroom. At 6kg and 2cm deep it is an easy one person hang with the two screws, washers and plugs supplied.

Gold leaf applied by hand means coverage varies from mirror to mirror, so no two are identical and the one you receive will not match a photograph exactly. That is the point of doing it by hand rather than printing it. The leaf sits behind the glass surface, so it cannot be rubbed off in normal use, though a hard knock to the rim will show. Clean with cleaner sprayed onto a cloth and keep water off the leafed section. A 100cm version is made in the same design. Because the leaf is asymmetric, it is worth holding the mirror against the wall and turning it before you mark the fixing, since the suspension lets you change your mind afterwards but the hole does not.
