Description

The Oorja is a round tray 28cm across and 0.5cm deep, so shallow that it reads as a disc dishing gently in the middle rather than a tray with a wall. The edge lifts a little and waves round the circle instead of running true. The whole face is hammered by hand in overlapping oval facets, densest towards the centre and opening out towards the rim, and every facet takes the light at its own angle.

At 28cm it holds a small group rather than a meal: candles, glassware and decorative objects. Used as a catch-all, it takes a small bowl or a ring set down on it. The dish is shallow enough that what sits on it stays in view, and the lift at the edge stops a small thing rolling off. It is not made to hang.

The tray is iron under a brass finish. Metalworkers form each one and then hammer the surface by hand, so the pattern of facets and the depth of the colour differ from tray to tray. The colour runs warm gold at the rim and browner towards the middle.
