Nyati Mango Wood Etched Round Tray - Dark

The Nyati is a round mango wood tray, 40.5cm across and 3cm deep, with a wide flat floor and a low rim that turns up round the edge. The rim is worked in short chiselled facets rather than turned smooth, so the outline is faintly irregular and the light breaks along it. The wood is finished dark, deep enough to read as a grey brown, with the figure of the grain running right across the floor of the tray.

At 40.5cm this is a large tray: it takes a pair of candlesticks and two or three glasses together, or carries a jug and cups from a kitchen into another room. The 3cm rim is enough to stop a glass sliding off the edge and low enough to lift things out over it, and the floor is flat, so nothing tilts. Left out on a table or a counter it works as a base that gathers up what would otherwise spread.

The tray is mango wood, cut for timber only once the trees have stopped bearing fruit, and it is worked by hand, so the facets round the rim fall differently on every one and the grain never repeats. It is food safe. The Nyati range also holds a serving platter and two serving bowls.

How do I look after it?

Wash it in warm soapy water, then rinse and dry it immediately. An edible oil such as olive or walnut oil rubbed into the surface with a cloth will nourish and protect the wood, though it may darken the tone. The colour will change over time.
