Description

Noren is a wall piece 176cm high by 152cm wide, made as two printed glass panels hung side by side with a gap between them and a large mirrored circle spanning both, so the gap cuts straight through the circle. The panels are printed a deep green, Pantone 546C, and they are two separate pieces rather than one panel with a line on it. The design is by Inge Rylant.

A noren is the split curtain hung in a Japanese doorway, and the gap here is doing the same thing: it reads as an opening you could pass through. At over a metre and a half each way it is the largest piece in this part of the range and it wants a wall of its own. It hangs in one direction. It is rated bathroom proof. At 24kg across two panels it is a two person hang, and the two panels must be set at the right spacing for the circle to line up, so mark both before fixing either.

The panels are printed and mirrored glass, frameless, at 2cm deep. Clean them with cleaner sprayed onto a soft cloth rather than onto the glass, and work outwards from the gap rather than across it. The green is printed on the same sheet as the silvering, so the colour sits under a sealed surface and will not scratch off. The two panels are not identical: one is a little wider than the other, so the circle is cut off centre rather than halved, and that asymmetry is what stops it reading as a diagram. Seven year warranty, made in Europe.
