Description

A wall clock, 80cm across, in wood. At this diameter it is read from the far side of a room, which is what the oversized markers are for. Up close it is a wall piece more than an instrument. At 80cm it is about as wide as a standard interior door. A wall clock is read from across a room and looked at from anywhere in it, so it is doing two jobs at once. Scale is what decides whether it manages both.

A burr surface reads as busy close up and as a warm tone from across a room, which is why it suits a piece meant to be noticed rather than one meant to recede.

It hangs on a sawtooth hook. The sawtooth sits over a nail or a small hook and can be shifted a tooth at a time to straighten it. Convenient, and strictly for light weights. It runs on 1 1.5 V cell, not included. The dial is marked in Roman numerals. At 4.2kg a single hook rated for the weight is enough.

There is nothing delicate about it. The finish takes a wipe, there is no crevice collecting dust and no fabric to mark, which is the practical case for it in a room that actually gets used. Scale is the whole decision with a wall clock. On a large wall a small clock reads as an afterthought, while an oversized one becomes the thing the wall is about. Measure the wall, not the clock.
