Description

A cabinet, 92cm tall, in wood. At 92cm wide it is wider than a standard interior door. A cabinet is closed storage in a room where open storage would look untidy, which is why it earns its place in a hall or a living room rather than a utility.

A burr surface reads as busy close up and as a warm tone from across a room, which is why it suits a piece meant to be noticed rather than one meant to recede. The body is MDF under the finish, which is what keeps a piece this size affordable and dimensionally stable — MDF does not move with the seasons the way solid timber does. 2 shelves.

An anti-tip wall strap is included, and on a tall piece it should be used.

A panel that carries weight over a span will sag eventually if the span is long enough. Shorter shelves, or a centre support, is what prevents it — not a thicker board. Check whether the shelves move. A fixed shelf decides what the cabinet can hold for its whole life; an adjustable one lets it hold bottles this year and files the next. It needs nothing beyond dusting, and a damp cloth on the finish rather than anything solvent.
