Description

The Neela is built from strings of small round mango wood beads. They hang from a turned wooden collar at the top, flare outward and cross a square mango wood frame at the widest point, then gather back in below and finish at a single bead. The beads are hand carved and the wood is not sorted for colour, so pale cream, tan and red brown run down the same string together. A brass chain and ceiling plate sit above, with a black flex through the links. The beaded body is 58.5cm deep and the frame 45cm across; with the chain at full length the whole fitting hangs 165cm.

Two brass lampholders sit on a bar inside the frame at the widest part, so the bulbs are surrounded by beads rather than covered by them. Light passes between the strings and breaks into small points and bands on the wall and the ceiling around it. It hangs long, so it suits a stairwell, a hallway, or a dining table in a room with the ceiling height to take it. It takes two E27 bulbs up to 40W each, it is dimmable, and it is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms.

The beads, the collar and the frame are all mango wood, and the chain and ceiling plate are brass. The wood is not sorted before the beads are carved and strung, which is what puts cream next to red brown on one string and makes no two fittings alike. Bulbs are not included.

Frequently Asked

Why are the beads different colours?

The wood is not sorted before the beads are carved, so cream, tan and red brown run down the same string. Every fitting comes out differently.

How far down does it hang?

The beaded body is 58.5cm. With the chain at full length the whole fitting measures 165cm from the ceiling.

How many bulbs does it take?

Two, both E27, up to 40W each. They sit on a bar inside the frame and are not included.

Will the colour stay the same?

Mango wood changes tone over time, so the colour of the beads will move with age.

How do I clean it?

Wipe the beads and the frame with a soft dry cloth. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners off the wood.
