Description

The Nayati is a candlestick turned from mango wood, 38cm tall and 14.5cm across at its widest. A wide shallow dish sits at the top on a waisted stem, above a stack of turned collars and a broad domed foot. A single metal pin stands in the middle of the dish, so a pillar candle pushes down onto it and holds there instead of dropping into a socket, and the diameter of the candle is open.

At 38cm this stands on a mantelpiece, a sideboard or a hearth rather than on a dining table, where it would sit in the line of sight across it. The dish is 14.5cm across and its rim turns up, so wax that runs off the candle stays on the dish rather than on the surface beneath.

The wood is mango and every one is turned by hand, so the figure of the grain runs differently from candlestick to candlestick and the open pores of the end grain show through the dark stain as paler flecks. Mango trees are grown first for their fruit and are cut for timber only once they have stopped bearing, which is what brings the wood into use at all. Nayati is made in two heights, this one at 38cm and a taller one at 53cm. The candle is not included.

Frequently Asked

What kind of candle does it take?

A pillar candle. It presses down onto the metal pin in the centre of the dish rather than sitting in a socket, so the diameter is yours to choose.

Is it sold on its own?

Yes, one candlestick. Nayati is made in two heights, 38cm and 53cm.

Does it get hot in use?

Yes. Stand the candle securely, keep it out of reach of children, let it cool fully before handling it, and never leave a burning candle unattended.

How do I keep wax off it?

Wash it in warm water with a mild dish soap after each use so wax does not build up. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners away from it.

Can the wood be treated?

An edible oil such as olive or walnut, rubbed into the surface with a cloth, will protect it. It may darken the tone of the wood.

Are any two the same?

No. Each is turned by hand, so the grain and the way the stain takes on it differ from one to the next.
