Nayati Large Mango Wood Pillar Candlestick - Dark Stain

The large Nayati stands 53cm and carries its turning in the lower third. A long plain shaft runs most of the height with the grain travelling straight up it, and beneath that shaft the wood swells into a baluster, steps in through a pair of collars and spreads into a disc foot. The top is a broad shallow dish with a metal pin set in the middle of it.

Stood with the shorter Nayati in front of it, the two read as a pair at different heights. It suits a mantelpiece, a hearth or a console against a plain wall. On a dining table 53cm would block the view across it. The dish at the top is 14.5cm wide and the pin holds a church candle upright.

Mango wood takes a stain unevenly because the pores in it are open, and the dark stain sits heavier in the end grain than across the shaft, so the figure shows through as paler streaks. Each one is turned singly on a lathe and no two carry the same figure. There is a smaller Nayati at 38cm. The candle is not supplied.

How tall is it?

53cm, with a dish 14.5cm across at the top. The smaller Nayati stands 38cm.

How does the candle sit on it?

On a metal pin in the centre of the dish. A pillar or church candle presses down onto the pin, so the width of the candle is open to you.

Is the candle included?

No. The candlestick is sold on its own.

What should I know before lighting it?

It will get hot in use. Stand the candle securely, keep it away from children, let it cool before moving it, and never leave it burning unattended.

How do I look after the wood?

Take the wax off after each use with warm water and a mild dish soap so it does not build up, and keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners off it. An edible oil worked into the surface will protect the wood and will darken its tone.
