Nayan Leather & Jute Dining Chair - Tan

The Nayan is a dining chair with a pale mango wood frame, a tan leather seat and a back panel of woven jute. The frame is square in section with the edges rounded off, and the wood is left light enough that the grain reads dark through it. The jute panel is stretched between the two back posts and folded over the rails at the top and the bottom. The leather seat is padded and domed, turned down over the seat rails and fixed at the sides with rivets.

The seat sits 46cm off the floor and is 49cm deep, on a chair 85cm to the top of the back and 45cm across, so it pulls under a table without taking much room at the side. It draws up to a round dining table. It stands equally well at a desk, or against the wall in a hallway. The jute back is an open weave and light passes through it.

The frame is mango wood, cut from trees that have stopped bearing fruit and would otherwise be felled for nothing. The seat is buffalo leather under a lacquered finish, which takes a patina with use. The back is jute, a rain fed crop that spins into a strong, durable thread. Nayan is also made as a counter chair.

How should it be looked after?

Wipe the leather with a soft, dry cloth, and avoid household cleaners and chemicals, which damage the finish. To stop the leather drying out and cracking, work in a specialist leather product, petroleum jelly or flax oil.
