Description

The Nayan is a counter stool 104cm tall on a frame of turned and hand-carved mango wood, pale and dry in tone with the grain showing through. The seat is buffalo leather, padded and rolled over the seat rails so it swells a little at the sides, and dished across the middle. The back is a single panel of woven jute stretched between two uprights, with a gap left between the panel and the seat. Four legs taper to the floor and are braced low down by stretchers on all four sides, the front rail set to take a foot. Small metal plates fixed with rivets hold the seat and the foot of the back panel to the frame.

The seat sits 68cm from the floor, 47cm across and 48cm deep, which is counter height rather than bar height: it goes under a kitchen island or a counter worktop. Pulled out from an island, the jute back faces the room. The frame is 48cm wide and 60cm deep, so two will sit side by side along a run of counter with a gap between them. At 6.7kg it is light enough to move with one hand.

The frame is mango wood, taken from trees that no longer bear fruit. The seat leather is buffalo, a by-product of farming, and it carries a lacquered finish that lets the tan deepen and take a patina with use. The back is jute, a rain-fed crop spun into thread and then woven. The range also runs to a dining chair in the same three materials.
