Description

The Naya is a turned wooden column on a square plinth. A plain cylindrical shaft rises from the plinth for roughly half the height, swells into a turned ball, then narrows and opens again into a tall urn shape before a short brass stem carries the lampholder. The mango wood is stained a deep chocolate brown, dark enough to read almost black at a distance, and the knots and splits in the timber are left showing right across the surface. It stands 152.5cm and weighs 8.28kg.

This is the heaviest base here by some margin, and the weight is what the shape needs: a column this substantial reads as furniture rather than as a lamp stand, so it holds a corner on its own and suits a large shade above it. A square plinth sits flat against a wall or a skirting board where a round foot would leave a gap. At 152.5cm the lampholder is above standing eye level. It takes one E27 bulb up to 40W and the flex runs 3.5m.

The column is turned and then worked by hand, so the depth of the carving varies, and the dark stain sinks further into the open grain and the splits than into the smooth faces. No two columns take it the same way. No shade and no bulb are included.

Frequently Asked

Does a shade come with it?

No, this is the base alone. A column this heavy carries a large shade comfortably, and a small one will look lost above it.

Is 8.28kg going to be awkward to move?

It is the heaviest of these bases, so it is a lamp you place once rather than move about. Lift it by the shaft rather than the plinth.

Are the splits in the wood a fault?

No. The knots and splits are in the timber and are left showing, and the dark stain sinks deeper into them than into the smooth faces, so they read as part of the surface.

How do I care for the wood?

A soft dry cloth. No harsh chemicals and no abrasive cleaners, and unplug it before going near it.
