Description

The Narwana is a bar stool with a padded leather seat and back set on an iron column. The seat is a shallow saddle, dished through the middle and turned up at the sides, and the back is a squared panel with its top corners rounded off, carried on a single flat iron strap. Both are stitched in vertical channels that run the full depth of the pad. The column tapers in at the waist and stands on a round flat foot, with a full iron ring set round it on four spokes.

The seat sits 70cm from the floor and the back rises to 103cm, which puts it at a raised counter or an island rather than a dining table. The ring takes the feet at that height and runs the whole way round, so the stool can be sat on from any side. Its footprint is 41 by 43cm and the base is a single disc, so it can be pulled in under an overhang without a leg catching on the way.

The leather is buffalo hide, a by-product of buffalo farming where the herds are tended by local herdsmen. It is dyed with vegetable extract and tree bark rather than a synthetic dye, so the green deepens with use rather than staying as it arrives. The frame is solid iron, forged and welded. The range runs on through a round stool in the same rich green, and through stools, a desk chair, a lounger and an armchair in aged tan.
