Description

The Narlu is a free standing planter: a rectangular zinc trough carried at the top of a slim iron frame, 70cm tall overall. The trough is 60cm long and 19.5cm from front to back, with straight sides and a rolled rim, and it nests down into the top of the frame rather than being fixed to it. The zinc has a grey, blotched patina with rust breaking through it in patches, and the frame is plain rust brown iron, four uprights and two rectangles and nothing else.

At 70cm the rim comes up to about waist height, so what is planted in it is met at eye level from a seat rather than looked down on. The 60cm length is enough to run a row of plants along, and at only 19.5cm front to back it takes up very little ground. That suits it to dividing a terrace into zones, running along the edge of a balcony, or standing under a window. It has drainage holes and is made for outdoor use.

The trough is zinc and the frame is iron. The finish is not sealed, so it weathers and ages further when it is left to the elements, and the rust already showing on both parts spreads with it. No two come up the same, because the patina falls differently across every trough. A mix of blooms goes in it as readily as something aromatic such as lavender or rosemary.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

70cm tall overall. The trough is 60cm long and 19.5cm from front to back.

Can it be left outside?

Yes. It is made for outdoor use and it has drainage holes.

Will it rust?

Yes. The finish is not sealed, so it weathers and ages further out in the open, and the item will rust more over time.

Will every planter look the same?

No. The patina falls differently across every trough, so the grey and the rust sit in different places on each one.

How do I look after it?

Store it away or bring it inside for the winter months, and go over it at least twice a year with warm soapy water so that dust, dirt or mould do not build up. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
