Description
The Nampo is a lantern 28cm tall and 14.5cm square, built as an iron frame glazed on all four sides with recycled glass. The roof is pitched on four faces up to a small square collar, with a flat strap handle folded over the top, and one of the glazed sides is hinged as a door with a small turned catch. A plain metal tray forms the floor inside. The finish leaves the metal mottled and weathered, darker in the hollows of the roof and rubbed back to a lighter tone along the edges of the base.
At 28cm it stands on a surface rather than on the floor: a hall table, a sideboard, a hearth or a wide window ledge. The glazing runs the full height of each side, so the flame is visible from every angle and the frame throws only the four corner lines onto a wall behind it. The door opens the whole of one side, so a candle can be set in and lit through it. The larger Nampo stands 36.5cm to this one at 28cm.
The frame is iron and the panels are glass. The glass is recycled: waste glass is collected and washed to take out impurities, then crushed, melted and mouth blown into a mould to form each panel, which is framed in metal and fitted between the base and the roof. Because the finish goes on over a frame made by hand, the depth of the ageing differs from lantern to lantern. The Nampo is also made at 36.5cm. The candle is not included.

Frequently Asked
How big is it?
28cm tall and 14.5cm square. The same lantern is made at 36.5cm.
What candle does it take?
The floor is a flat metal tray with no fitting, so the candle stands on it. A pillar candle suits the larger size and a smaller candle this one.
Is the glass recycled?
Yes. The waste glass is collected and washed to take out impurities, then crushed and melted down before it is mouth blown into a mould to form each panel.
Can it be used outdoors?
No. It is for indoor use only.
How do I look after it?
Wipe it regularly with a soft, dry cloth so dust and dirt do not build up, and use a microfibre cloth in a circular motion on the glass. To take off excess wax, use warm water with a mild dish soap, dry it immediately and do not leave it to soak.
Does it get hot in use?
Yes. Position the candle securely, keep the flame away from the glass, keep it out of reach of children, wait until it has cooled fully before handling it, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
