Description

The Nadee is a tapered drum woven from banana fibre and lined pale on the inside. Pale stitched threads run vertically at close intervals with the fibre passing horizontally between them, so the surface reads as a fine ribbed grid with the grey brown of the leaf showing through. This is the extra large, the deepest and widest of the four: 26cm tall and 46cm across, with a taper gentle enough that it reads almost as a cylinder.

At this size the weave stops being a texture and becomes the whole surface of the object, so the shade wants a base substantial enough to carry it and a position where it will be seen from a few feet away rather than looked down into. That means a floor lamp base or a pendant hanging alone; on a table lamp it will overhang the surface. The depth hides the lampholder from every normal angle, and the density of the fibre means most of the light leaves through the open ends rather than the sides. It weighs 0.71kg.

Banana leaves are processed into a fibre and woven into a fabric before the shade is stitched by hand around a metal frame, so the run of the fibre and the spacing of the stitching differ from shade to shade. The Nadee range runs from small to extra large. No bulb, base or fitting is included.
