Miranda E27 Pendant Light 40cm Smoke Fade - Matt Black

A blown glass ball, 40cm across, hangs from a matt black suspension and shades from clear at the base to a deep smoke at the crown. The E27 socket sits inside the globe, so the lamp you choose does a good deal of the work: a round globe lamp reads as a soft ball of light, while a clear tubular shows off the filament through the tinted glass. It will dim with a compatible lamp and dimmer.

We reach for this one over a dining table or a kitchen island, where a wide ball balances a long run of worktop without crowding the room. It suits a generous hallway or a landing too, and the drop adjusts to as much as 2m for a stairwell. In a smaller room it looks best hung fairly high, so the glass reads as a shape rather than something to duck around. Because it takes a standard screw fitting, you can move between a warmer lamp in winter and something brighter for working light.

The glass is the whole story here, so keep it clear: a dry microfibre cloth lifts dust, and fingerprints come away with a barely damp cloth once the power is off and the globe is cool. The black metalwork asks for nothing more than the same dusting, with no polish and no solvents near the tint. Lamps up to 20W are the limit and none is supplied, so choose the shape before it goes up. It carries a one year warranty. How wide is the glass globe?

The glass ball measures 400mm in diameter, with an overall body height of 500mm.

How far down does it hang?

The drop is adjustable from 660mm at its shortest to 2000mm at its longest, so it can sit low over a table or high in a stairwell.

Which lamp should I use?

It takes one E27 lamp up to 20W. LED works well here in GLS A60, globe G80 or tubular T280 shapes, depending on whether you want diffuse light or a visible filament.

Can I dim it?

Yes, with a dimmable lamp and a matching dimmer. Neither the lamp nor the dimmer is supplied.

Is the smoke tint even all over?

No. The glass fades, running deeper towards the top and clearing towards the bottom of the ball, which keeps the light open below.

How should I clean the glass?

Switch off at the wall and let everything cool, then dust with a dry microfibre cloth. For marks, use a cloth wrung out in warm water and dry it straight away.
