Miranda E27 Pendant Light 30cm Smoke Fade - Matt Black

A blown glass sphere of 30cm hangs on black metalwork, the glass grading from matt black into a softer smoke tone, so the shape reads almost solid from across the room and quietly translucent close up. An E27 socket sits inside, which means the lamp you choose does a good deal of the work: a round globe lamp echoes the sphere, while a GLS or a slim tubular keeps the centre of the fitting calmer. Lit, it gives a warm, tempered glow rather than a hard beam onto the floor.

We reach for this one over a dining table or a kitchen island, and in hallways and stairwells where a round form suits the space better than a cone or a drum. The drop is adjustable, so it can hang low over a table or sit higher where there is headroom to keep. It dims with a compatible lamp and a separate dimmer, worth doing in a dining room where you want the level brought down once the plates are cleared. It suits a room after something graphic without being loud, and the tint keeps it gentler than clear glass.

The globe is glass throughout, with the suspension finished in matt black so the attention stays on the shading. Dust it with a dry microfibre cloth, and for marks use a cloth barely damp with glass cleaner once the power is off and the glass has cooled. Smoked glass does show fingerprints, so handle it by the collar rather than the belly. It carries a one year warranty. How far down does it hang?

The drop adjusts between 500mm and 1500mm, with a body height of 400mm, so it can sit close to a table or drop into a stairwell.

Which lamp should I fit?

An E27 lamp of up to 20W. LED versions of the GLS A60, the G80 globe or the T185 tubular all suit the sphere; a G80 globe centres most neatly within it.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, provided you use a dimmable lamp with a compatible dimmer. Neither the lamp nor the dimmer comes with the pendant.

What is the smoke fade like?

The glass shades from matt black through to a lighter smoke, so the tone changes down the globe rather than being one flat colour.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

No. It is rated IP20 and belongs in dry rooms such as dining rooms, kitchens, bedrooms and halls, away from splashes and steam.

How heavy is it?

It weighs 1.4kg, and the glass globe measures 300mm across.
