Description

Mica holds a large ovoid plate of natural Spanish alabaster in a matt black cradle that wraps its lower edge and carries it clear of the wall. The cradle rises from a tapering black stem fixed flat to the plaster, so the stone appears to be lifted and presented rather than mounted. The plate stands 500mm tall by 200mm wide and the fitting projects 170mm, which is the deepest reach of any wall light in this range.

One E14 lamp sits behind the plate. Because the stone is held away from the wall rather than against it, light escapes around the whole perimeter as well as through the alabaster, so the fitting throws a halo onto the plaster behind and a soft glow forward at the same time. The black metalwork stays as a silhouette against that halo, which is what gives the piece its graphic outline in a dim room.

The cradle and stem are solid copper finished in matt black, and the plate is cut from natural Spanish alabaster, so the veining and translucency are unique to the block. Bulbs are supplied separately, which lets you choose the output and colour temperature to suit the room. At 170mm deep it wants a wall it can stand off from rather than a tight corridor. Rated IP20 for interior use. The stem is fixed flat to the plaster and carries the whole weight, so at that projection the fixing wants a solid substrate rather than plasterboard alone. Unlit the plate reads as a pale oval against black; lit, the halo behind it separates the two entirely.
