Description
The Mercury IP55 is a 2-gang weatherproof mains socket with independent transparent PVC covers over each outlet, providing IP55-rated protection against dust ingress and low-pressure water jets from any direction. The white impact-resistant housing measures 150 x 90 x 63mm and includes two M20 cable glands fitted, with nine additional M20 knockouts around the perimeter for flexible cable routing.
Designed for sheltered outdoor installation in gardens, patios, sheds and workshops, the socket provides two standard UK 13A outlets behind individually-hinged covers that allow one outlet to remain protected while the other is in use. The IP55 rating makes it suitable for locations exposed to rain and garden hose spray but not for direct submersion or unprotected exposure to driving rain. The transparent covers allow you to see whether an appliance is plugged in without opening the cover.
The impact-resistant housing withstands knocks from garden tools, wheelbarrows and general outdoor handling without cracking. The M20 cable glands accept armoured cable or standard twin-and-earth cable with appropriate gland adapters, and the multiple knockout positions allow the socket to be surface-mounted on timber, brick or block walls with the cable entry from top, bottom, left, right or rear depending on the mounting surface and cable run.

Frequently Asked
What does IP55 mean for outdoor use?
IP55 provides protection against dust ingress and low-pressure water jets from any direction. This makes the socket suitable for sheltered outdoor locations like covered patios, sheds and garages, but not for unprotected exposure to driving rain or submersion.
Can both outlets be used at the same time?
Yes. Each outlet has an independent hinged cover, so you can open one or both covers as needed. When only one outlet is in use, the other remains sealed behind its closed cover.
What cable does it accept?
The socket includes two M20 cable glands and has nine additional M20 knockouts. It accepts armoured cable or standard twin-and-earth cable with an appropriate M20 gland adapter fitted.
Is it suitable for permanent outdoor installation?
Yes, provided the installation is in a sheltered location. The IP55 rating handles rain and moisture from garden hoses, but the socket should be mounted under an overhang, in a shed, or in another position that avoids prolonged direct exposure to heavy rain.
