Description

The Mercury is a 1-gang 2-way switch enclosed in an IP55-rated white housing with a transparent PVC cover over the rocker. The housing is made from impact-resistant plastic with five M20 cable gland knockouts, two of which come supplied with rubber glands for cable entry. The IP55 rating provides protection against dust ingress and low-pressure water jets from any direction, making it suitable for sheltered outdoor installations.

Designed for garden lighting, garage door circuits, patio lighting and external security lights, the switch provides 2-way switching control for circuits up to 10A at 230V. The transparent cover allows the rocker position to be checked at a glance while keeping rain and dirt off the switch mechanism. The housing dimensions of 75 x 89 x 64mm allow surface mounting onto external walls, fence posts or outbuilding walls using standard screw fixings.

The white finish provides a neutral appearance against rendered or painted masonry. The cover lifts off the housing for wiring access without removing the entire unit from the wall. Cable entry is through the M20 knockouts on the base and sides of the housing, with rubber glands providing a weatherproof seal around incoming cables. The 147g weight and compact footprint mean the switch can be mounted onto timber posts or lightweight cladding without additional support.

Frequently Asked

What does IP55 mean in practice?

IP55 provides protection against dust ingress and low-pressure water jets from any direction. This makes the switch suitable for sheltered outdoor use such as under eaves, covered patios, garages and carports, but it is not designed for full exposure to driving rain or submersion.

What is 2-way switching?

2-way switching allows the same light or circuit to be controlled from two different switch positions. This requires a pair of 2-way switches wired together. If you only need a single switch position for on/off control, a 1-way switch is sufficient.

How are cables connected?

Cables enter through M20 cable gland knockouts on the base and sides of the housing. Two rubber M20 glands are supplied with the switch. Additional glands can be purchased separately if more than two cable entries are needed.

Can this be used indoors?

Yes. The IP55 rating makes it suitable for indoor use in damp or dusty environments such as workshops, garages, utility rooms and cellars, as well as outdoor applications.
