Description

The Mercury F2.5A is a 6 x 32mm fast-acting glass tube fuse rated at 2.5 amps and 250V AC. Designed as a quick blow type, the fuse element melts within milliseconds when current exceeds the 2.5A threshold, providing immediate protection for sensitive electronics, control circuits and low-power equipment. Sold in packs of six.

Quick blow fuses are used in circuits where rapid fault response is critical to prevent component damage from even brief overcurrent conditions. Common applications include bench power supplies, amplifier protection circuits, LED driver protection, test equipment, automotive electronics and AV distribution units where typical loads sit well below 2.5A and any overcurrent indicates a fault condition rather than a normal transient.

The 6 x 32mm dimension is a standard cartridge fuse size widely used in European and UK equipment, fitting most panel-mount fuseholders, inline fuseholders and PCB-mount clips rated for this body size. The glass tube allows visual inspection of the fuse element without removal — a blown fuse shows a broken wire and often discolouration inside the tube. IEC compliance ensures the breaking capacity meets international standards for safe operation at the rated 250V.

Frequently Asked

What's the difference between quick blow and slow blow fuses?

Quick blow fuses react within milliseconds to any overcurrent, making them suitable for sensitive electronics where even a brief overload can cause damage. Slow blow (time-delay) fuses tolerate short inrush currents during motor or transformer start-up, only breaking if the overcurrent persists for several seconds.

Can I use a higher-rated fuse if I don't have a 2.5A to hand?

No. Using a higher-rated fuse (e.g. 3A or 5A) removes the circuit protection the 2.5A fuse was providing. If the original specification calls for 2.5A, the circuit designer calculated that value to protect specific components downstream. Exceeding it risks equipment damage or fire.

How do I know if the fuse has blown?

The glass body allows visual inspection. A blown fuse shows a broken wire element inside the tube, often with black discolouration on the glass from the arc that occurred when the element melted. If you cannot see the element clearly, use a multimeter on continuity mode to confirm.

Are these suitable for automotive use?

The 250V AC rating means these are designed for mains-voltage circuits, not 12V or 24V automotive systems. While the physical size may fit some automotive fuseholders, automotive environments typically require blade-type fuses (ATO/ATC) or mini/micro blade fuses rated for DC interruption and vibration resistance.
