Description

The Mendai in moss green is a tapered drum in a deep olive velvet, lined in natural linen that shows as a pale band at the top rim. The washed cotton pile lifts and darkens as the shade turns, so the green shifts between a dry khaki and something nearer forest. This is the large: 21.5cm tall and 40.5cm across, with a gentler taper than the smaller sizes.

Forty centimetres is floor lamp width, and a dark green shade at that size is a decision about the whole corner rather than about the lamp. On an ordinary side table it overhangs; on a floor lamp base over a metre tall it is in proportion with the column, and it takes that lamp firmly out of the neutral register. Very little light passes through velvet this deep, so what reaches the room leaves through the open ends, and the pale linen lining is what stops the downward light going grey. At 21.5cm deep the lampholder is hidden from a seated eye. It weighs 0.53kg.

The velvet and linen are stitched by hand over an iron frame, so the pile and the seam differ from one shade to the next. The Mendai range runs from small to extra large in this moss green and again in a mocha. No bulb, base or fitting is included.
