Description

The Mendai is a tapered drum in mocha velvet, lined in natural linen. This is the extra large, the deepest of the four as well as the widest: 26cm tall and 46cm across. At that scale the taper is very gentle and the shade reads as a solid block of warm brown, with the washed pile catching light unevenly across a much larger face than the smaller sizes offer.

A shade this size decides the proportion of whatever it sits on, so it wants a substantial floor lamp base or a pendant hanging alone, and it will overhang most table lamps. Depth matters as much as width here: at 26cm the lampholder is out of sight from any normal angle, and a great deal of the light stays inside the velvet, leaving mainly through the open ends. In a corner that gives a strong pool and a strong wash with the middle of the room left to something else. It weighs 0.71kg.

The velvet and linen are stitched by hand over an iron frame, so the pile lies differently on each one. The Mendai range runs from small to extra large in this mocha and again in a moss green. No bulb, base or fitting is included.
