Description

The Mendai in moss green is a tapered drum in a deep olive velvet, lined in natural linen. This is the extra large, the deepest of the four as well as the widest: 26cm tall and 46cm across. At that scale the taper is very gentle and the shade reads as a solid block of dark green, with the washed pile catching the light unevenly across a much larger face than the smaller sizes give it.

A shade this size and this dark sets the tone of a room rather than a table, so it wants a substantial floor lamp base or a pendant hanging on its own, and it will overhang most table lamps. Depth compounds the colour: at 26cm almost all the light stays inside the velvet and leaves through the open ends, which gives a strong pool below and a strong wash above with very little spreading sideways. In a corner that is a particular effect rather than a general light. It weighs 0.71kg.

The velvet and linen are stitched by hand over an iron frame, so the pile lies differently on each one. The Mendai range runs from small to extra large in this moss green and again in a mocha. No bulb, base or fitting is included.
