Description

This is a tray made of 100% MDF in blue, 35cm long, 24cm wide and 5cm tall, with a raised rim running all the way round. Its outline is the first thing you notice: a rectangle whose sides step inward in a soft curve at each corner, like the shape of an old picture frame. In the centre sits a detailed illustration of a bird perched on a flowering branch, framed by a fine double line traced just inside the rim. At 0.52KG it is light enough to carry from room to room with one hand.

The maker lists it as not food safe, so we think of it as a tray for display and for gathering small things together. On a hallway console it keeps keys, sunglasses and post in one place; on a dressing table it holds jewellery, perfume bottles and a hairbrush; on a coffee table it brings remote controls and a few favourite books into one tidy group. The raised rim keeps smaller pieces from sliding off the edge, and at 24cm wide it sits comfortably on a bedside table or the corner of a desk. It suits anyone who likes a little pattern in a room, and it makes a thoughtful gift for a new home or for a birdwatcher.

The tray is MDF, a dense, smooth board made from fine wood fibres, which is why it holds a flat, even surface so well. The blue runs over the base, the inside of the rim and the outer walls, so it looks finished from every side, not only from above. Like any MDF, it is happiest kept away from standing water. To style it, set it lengthways on a sideboard with a small vase of dried flowers and a stack of books, leaving the bird in view; leaned upright on a shelf, it also works as a small picture in its own right.
