Description

A glass Christmas bauble 15cm across, with the cap and hanging ring taking the overall height to 20cm. The surface is mottled and pitted over the whole sphere, running gold through bronze into dark green and near black, with the tones bleeding into one another rather than sitting in bands. A fluted metal collar caps the neck and carries a small ring, and the bauble hangs from a dark green ribbon threaded through it.

At 15cm across this is a single decoration rather than one of a set, and it hangs on its own from a window catch, a beam, a bannister or a door frame as readily as from a tree. On a tree it needs a low branch close to the trunk, where the weight sits over the stem rather than out at the tip. The mottling catches light unevenly, so the sphere reads gold on one side and close to black on the other and shifts as it turns.

The glass is recycled and the colouring happens in the heat: as the blown sphere cools, mineral vapours react with the surface to leave the veining, the iridescence and the pitting, so no two come out alike. The Mavu range also holds a larger giant bauble, 20cm across and 25cm to the top of the ring, and a set of four smaller baubles in bronze and green.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

15cm across the sphere, and 20cm to the top of the hanging ring. The larger Mavu is 20cm across.

Will every one look the same?

Not exactly. The colouring is a reaction between mineral vapours and the hot glass, so the veining and the pitting fall differently on every sphere and no two are alike.

What does it hang from?

A dark green ribbon, tied through the ring on the cap.

Is the glass recycled?

Yes. The sphere is blown from recycled glass.

How do I look after it?

Wipe the dust away with a dry, soft cloth and handle it with care. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners off it, as they will damage the finish. It is for indoor use only.
