Description

The Marlinspike is a compact garden spike light in solid brass with an antique brass finish. A short cylindrical head, deep brown with a brighter brass rim at the front, sits on a pivoting bracket above a tapered stake that pushes into the soil. The head is 6cm across, and the maker gives the body as 146mm long and the spike as 210mm, so this is a small light that tucks in among planting. It weighs 0.83KG. The IP64 rating settles the outdoor question: it is dust-tight and protected from splashing, so it lives outside in British weather.

This is a light for picking out a feature. The maker says it is meant to put focused light on plants, paths and architectural details, and the head angles on its bracket, so you can aim it up into a tree, along the edge of a border or across the face of a wall. A marlinspike is the pointed tool sailors use to splice rope, and the tapering stake shares that shape. The maker says a maritime influence shows in the range's materials, designs and names, and the Marlinspike sits as happily beside a boathouse or a coastal garden as in a town front garden.

The maker says it is solid brass throughout, the spike included, and describes it as made to stay outdoors for good, with parts that can be replaced, which keeps upkeep simple. The maker also describes the finish as aged-looking, and solid brass darkens and mellows outdoors, so the light settles into a garden rather than standing apart from it. The cable enters through the base. It takes one GU10 lamp, which is not included, so add one to your order. As a mains light, it is installed by a qualified electrician, and deciding where each light goes, and which feature it should light, before that visit saves time on the day.

Frequently Asked

Can the Marlinspike stay in the garden permanently?

Yes. It is rated IP64, so it is dust-tight and protected from splashing, and the maker describes it as made to stay outdoors for good.

Does it come with a bulb?

No. It takes a single GU10 lamp, which is not included, so add one to your order alongside the light.

Can I angle the light?

Yes. The head pivots on a bracket at the top of the stake, so you can tilt it towards a plant, a path or a wall.

How big is the Marlinspike?

The head is 6cm across and the light weighs 0.83KG. The maker gives the body as 146mm long and the ground spike as 210mm.

Will the antique brass finish change over time?

Solid brass darkens and mellows outdoors, and the maker describes this finish as aged-looking from the start, so it settles naturally into a garden.
