Description
The Maji is a tealight holder carved from soft stone, 21cm across, 18cm the other way and 3cm thick. Seven round hollows are cut into the face, one at the centre and six around it, each deep enough to hold a tealight below the surface. Four small pointed lugs stand out from the rim, two to each side, so the outline is not quite a circle. The stone is a dense near black, matt rather than polished, and fine tool marks run across the whole face.
The seven hollows sit close together, so the tealights burn as one group rather than spread across a surface, and at 3cm thick the holder keeps the flames almost level with the table. That suits a coffee table, the centre of a dining table or a windowsill, and all seven hollows take a tealight. At 1.3kg it is heavy for its size and stays where it is put.
The stone is a soft stone, chosen because it can be worked, and each holder is shaped and smoothed by hand. The form is taken from a traditional game once played in South India. Because every piece is cut by hand, the depth of the hollows and the tool marks across the face differ from one to the next. Tealights are not included.

Frequently Asked
How many tealights does it hold?
Seven. One in the centre and six around it.
Are tealights included?
No.
What is it made from?
Soft stone, carved and smoothed by hand, in an antique black.
How big is it?
21cm across at its widest, 18cm the other way and 3cm thick. It weighs 1.3kg.
How should it be looked after?
Do not use chemical cleaners on it. Wipe it regularly with a cloth so dust does not build up in the hollows.
Does it get hot in use?
Yes. Position the tealights securely, keep it out of reach of children, wait until it has cooled fully before handling it, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
