Description

The Mahi is a shelving unit 170cm tall, 90cm wide and 35cm deep, built as an open frame of slim square-section iron under an antique brass finish. Five flat shelves sit in it, the lowest 18cm off the floor and the rest spaced 37cm apart up to the top. There is no back and there are no sides: the frame is four uprights and the shelf edges, so the wall behind shows through it from any angle. The brass finish is worked unevenly, pale gold along the top faces of the tube and dropping to a dark brown where it turns away.

170cm by 90cm gives a full wall of storage without a cupboard's bulk, and at 35cm deep it stands against a hall or a landing wall without narrowing the way past. The 37cm between shelves takes a hardback standing upright, a tall storage jar or a table lamp, none of which fit a standard bookcase shelf, and the 18cm gap at the floor keeps the skirting visible so the unit does not read as built in. Because it is open on all four sides it will divide a room without blocking the light. It takes up to 50kg and weighs 31kg itself.

The frame and the shelves are iron, finished in antique brass by hand, which is why the tone shifts along the length of a single upright. The Mahi range also runs to side tables, a console table, a bench and wall-mounted pieces in the same finish, and the shelving unit is made in a narrower size as well as this one.

What is it made from?

Iron, finished in antique brass.
